How did I come up with this topic? Well, I was in the middle of creating a Facebook group that correlates with my main website, Fitique World (www.fitiqueworld.com). I was coming up with names for my future group and I was stuck between incorporating fitness or health & wellness. Then it made me realize, what is the true distinction between all three terms? I know we’re all used to seeing fitness, health and wellness used quite commonly but what is the difference between all three and how do all of these terms relate?
We’ll start off with health. Health can be defined as:
- Health – A state of complete mental, physical, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity
Next, we’ll define the word fitness:
- Fitness – The condition of being physically fit and healthy and involves attributes that include cardiorespiratory endurance, mental acuity, muscular strength, muscular endurance, body composition and flexibility
Lastly, we’ll define the word wellness:
- Wellness – The act of practicing healthy habits on a daily basis to attain better physical and mental health outcomes
How do these terms relate to each other? Simple! You can’t have one without the other two to be truly healthy. It’s possible to be physically fit but unhealthy at the same time or vice versa. Let’s face it, it doesn’t matter how often you’re at the gym you can’t run away from a trashy diet. Wellness also incorporates mental health, such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and other ailments. You can boost your mental health with activities such as meditation, spending time with loved ones, relaxation and self-care. It’s important to take care of each aspect of your overall wellness. Wellness is pretty much the balance of physical, nutritional and mental health. You can add emotional, social, and financial health to that mix as well. As long as fitness, health and wellness are balanced, you will have a productive life! Remember to take care of yourself!
